How do I set the timing on my '94 Golf 3 GL?

I checked the timing on my Golf, and noticed that the timing was retarded. The car is German, and I don't know how to adjust the ignition timing.How do I set the timing on my '94 Golf 3 GL?I am not familiar with volkswagon but if the car has coil packs and no distributor it can only be changed by the computer. These type ignition systems are supposed to be self adjusting and do not have any way of setting them by hand with the exception of moving the crank trigger. If you are finding the timing to be retarded there may be a specific procedure for checking it properly. I would get a repair manual and check it. It will also come in handy in the future for other problems that may arise.
