How much would it cost to turn a volkswagon golf into a covertible by a mechanic?

i really really want a volkswagon golf convertible for my first car but there is not one golf convertible for sale where i live, clearly i'm not looking hard enough but i would like to know if it would be easier just buying a regular golf and turning it into a convertible and how much would it cost.

Back in the early 1980s, Lee Iaccoca, the president of Chrysler, wanted to re-introduce convertibles to the US. (Our car companies hadn't been making convertibles for a while). He asked some of his engineers if they could convert one of their cars to a convertible, and they told him it was impossible. He got angry. He wanted to drive around in a convertible and see peoples' reactions. So they ended up cutting the roof off a car, but they also had to weld the doors closed and weld supports into them. So Iaccoca had to climb over the top to get in, but then he could drive it like a convertible, except of course he couldn't put the top up. There are extra frame supports and stiffeners there, as well as body changes. All VW verts were designed by Karmann Coach Works which is no longer in business as they went bankrupt and out of business as of last year.



It is easier for you to find a Cabrio, or a Cabriolet and rebuild it than it is to make a coupe to a vert.



Before they made a new VW beetle vert, I saw a Road and Track article where some lady had a beetle customed by a shop as a vert for about 20K. Easily the cost of a used Cabrio.

Lets see you need to find a custom body shop that can cut the roof off and reinforce the body. Then you need the top. Figure about $20,000 or so in parts and labor. Convertibles are more than just cars with no tops. The roof helps the car in many ways and when you take it off you need to reinforce the car to make up for the missing part.
