Find a wrecked MkIII Golf with low miles. I would assume the trans. is shot unless you can get a trusted mechanic's opinion.

The 97 Golf is a MkIII which was produced from 1993-1999 and if you plan to replace the gearbox yourself do yourself a favor and get a proper Bentley manual (not a Haynes manual!)
